Fossil forest

The petrified forest (Foresta Fossile) is in Dunarobba near Avigliano Umbro; it was rediscovered at the end of the seventies.
This forest is the only known example of herbal relicts from the Quarternary (apx. 1.5 million years ago), an example of a Texodium-wood (diameter of 1.5 m, 8 m high) extincted 1.200.000 years ago. Typical for this unique wood is the vertical position of the big tree trunks in comparison with other findings elsewhere lying always horizontally.
Many researchers suppose that this forest was buried in a short timespan, probably because of a flood followed by a quick sedimentation.
